Annual Conference 2012 in Corfu, Greece

On the 25th and 26th of June, the Corfu Port Authority organized the 2nd Annual Conference of the SuPorts project. More than 50 ports managers and experts attended the 2 working days which did more than assessing the current achievements of the project but enabled to get new experiences, to review the evolving European legislation as well as discussing environmental management systems as well as port certifications (PERS, EMAS, ISO 14001).

management systems. Pros, Cons and Differences regarding Local Ports

Tafil Kola & Kostas Dimas participated in the conference hold in Corfu. The conference was hold within the SUPORTS project. It is an INTERREG IVC, EU funded project aiming at assisting local ports in the implementation of environmental strategies and to facilitate their access to suitable environmental management tools, enabling them to remain competitive by contributing to a more sustainable EU transferring knowledge of effective environmental management to local ports. Within conference’s dissemination activities, Port of Saranda was invited to Corfu to participate to the event. The conference introduced port of Saranda the idea of Environmental Management Systems, biodiversity issues that local ports are currently dealing with and sustainable dredging methods used. Port of Saranda set out knowing environmental practices & policies that other local ports use, met up with port people and stakeholders, exchanged ideas and management policies. The port director met with port managers from other European Countries where they had the opportunity to exchange opinions, asking for possible solution to environmental problems & dredging practices. More Specifically, Saranda Port exchanged ideas with Port of Piombino (Italy), Port of Fecamp & Le Treport (France), Port of Amsterdam & ECOSLC (Netherlands), Port of Corfu-Kavala-Volos (Greece), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), Galicia group of Ports (Spain). Mr Kola has also introduced to the participants the ELPORTAL project by presenting them project objectives, difficulties Albanian ports are facing etc.
